Biography

A seven-year veteran roaming NFL defensive backfields, Ihedigbo comes to Detroit and joins fellow S Glover Quin as one of the most experienced safety tandems in the League. Joined the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2007 and played three seasons with the team (2008-10) before stops in New England (2011) and most recently Baltimore (2012-13). Played in a reserve safety role with the Ravens in 2012 en route to the team’s Super Bowl XLVII win over San Francisco. Career totals include 85 games (31 starts), 199 tackles (130 solo), six sacks, three interceptions, 13 pass defenses, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

2011: In his only season with the Patriots, finished the season with a then-career high 72 tackles, one pass defense and four special teams tackles.

  • Produced a then-career-high-tying eight tackles vs. Minnesota (12/24).
  • Saw extensive action in the postseason, recording 20 tackles, one sack and one pass defense in three playoff games.

2010: Finished his tenure with the Jets in 2010 and ended the season with 10 tackles, a career-high three sacks and one fumble recovery. Also finished second on the team with 26 special teams tackles.

  • Netted a season-high three tackles at Miami (9/26).
  • Had sacks at Buffalo (10/3), at Cleveland (11/14) and at New England (12/6). His three sacks ranked second on the team among all defensive backs.
  • Participated in three postseason contests, producing two tackles and one special teams stop.

2009: Led the Jets with a career-high 27 special teams tackles and posted six tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble for the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense in 2009.

  • Had one tackle and his first-career sack (four yards) at Tampa Bay (12/13).
  • Recorded his first-career forced fumble in the season finale vs. Cincinnati (1/3). Finished the game with two tackles and one sack (seven yards).
  • Played in all three postseason contests, finishing with six tackles and a total of 10 special teams stops.

2008: After being named to the Jets’ 53-man roster from the practice squad on October 29, finished the season with two tackles and 11 special teams tackles. Originally joined the team’s practice squad on September 3.

2007: Spent his entire rookie season on Reserve/Injured (arm) after signing with the Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent.

COLLEGE
A former walk-on at Massachusetts, earned his way to becoming a three-year starter (45-of-47) games and finished his collegiate career with 257 tackles (171 solo), 12.5 sacks, 23.5 tackles for loss, nine interceptions and 28 pass defenses.

  • Ranked sixth on the team with 72 tackles as a senior in 2006 and also posted five sacks, four forced fumbles (led Atlantic 10), eight pass defenses and three interceptions. Started all 11 and was named Third Team All-Atlantic 10 after recording eight pass defenses and three interceptions.
  • Named Third Team All-Atlantic 10 as a sophomore as a member of the nation’s leading scoring defense and No. 3 ranked total defense as a junior in 2005.
  • Majored in sociology.

PERSONAL
Attended Amherst (Mass.) High School where he was a two-time All-Western Massachusetts and All-League selection. Rushed for 1,012 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior, while totaling more than 2,000 all-purpose yards.

  • Selected to play in the Shrine Chowder Classic Bowl and was also a member of the basketball, lacrosse and track teams.
  • Established HOPE Africa (Helping Our People Excel) to aide as a boost for future young African leaders. In November 2012, hosted a celebrity fundraising dinner party with teammates benefitting the organization.
  • Participated in several Ravens’ NFL Play 60 school visits.
  • Supported numerous Ravens teammates’ charity events, including Vonta Leach’s Celebrity Billiards Tournament benefitting breast cancer research and the Lardarius Webb Charity Bowling Classic.
