Starting strong safety James Ihedigbo sat out practice Thursday with knee and neck injuries, per the first practice report of the season.

Ihedigbo missed the team’s third preseason game vs. Jacksonville, and didn’t travel to the final preseason game in Buffalo so he could seek treatment, according to head coach Jim Caldwell.

Ihedigbo told reporters earlier this week that his absence from practice was mostly due to rest and he expected to be ready to go by Monday night when the Lions host the New York Giants. The team will release game designations for Monday night on Detroitlions.com Saturday afternoon.

Ihedigbo has been working off to the side of practice with trainers and looks to be moving well.

Also sitting out Thursday’s practice was safety Don Carey with a hamstring injury.

Rookie defensive tackle Caraun Reid showed up on the practice report as a limited participant in Thursday’s practice with a shoulder injury.
