He immediately smiled and said, ‘Best name in football.’
He just might be right about that.
Fox thinks Cooter is going to be a pretty good football coach, too.
“I didn’t want to lose him,” Fox said. “We tried to keep him. He’s going to get a coaching position, a very important position (coaching) quarterback. That’s kind of his dream. I think you guys got a heck of a coach.”
Cooter was a key part of the Broncos’ game planning this past season preparing scouting reports on opposing defenses.
“He didn’t have a position, but he did a lot of research work,” Fox said. “He’s tireless as far as a worker. I think he’s smart and quick thinking. I’m excited for him.”
Fox thinks Lions quarterback
“Jim (Caldwell) is no dummy, he hired him,” Fox said. “It will definitely help.”
MEETING ON HOLD
Lions president Tom Lewand will not be meeting with
Lewand said he called Sexton Sunday to cancel the meeting because he didn’t think this was the most conducive setting to hold those meetings.
Lewand and Sexton have a good working relationship and the plan is to meet sometime after the NFL Annual Meetings are over.
The Lions are trying to work out an extension for Suh, who is in the final year of his rookie contract that counts $22.4 million towards the team’s salary cap.
NO TRADE FOR LESHOURE
Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has no plans to trade running back Mikel Lesoure.
“I haven’t had an interest in trading Mikel,” Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said. “I want to see him come in and perform and be the player he can be.
The Lions have a new offensive coordinator in Joe Lombardi, who says he’s bringing the New Orleans Saints playbook to Detroit.
The Saints had four running backs rush the football at least 53 times last season. Pierre Thomas (147), Mark Ingram (78), Khirby Robinson (54) and Darren Sproles (53) all shared the load.
“Guys that make plays will get carries,” Mayhew said. “You can go back to New Orleans’ offense, which is what encouraged me about Joe. Pierre Thomas had a role. Sproles had a role. Mark Ingram had a role. At one point Chris Ivory had a role when he was down there with them. They found a way to utilize guys who could make plays.
The Lions could potentially feature the same kind of attack with Bush, Bell, Riddick and Leshoure.
Leshoure had his best season in 2012 when he recorded 798 yards (3.7 average) and nine touchdowns.
