Delmas took visits to both St. Louis and San Francisco this week to hear sales pitches after the Lions offered him a contract last week following a physical in Allen Park. It's likely his new deal has some incentive-laden structure to it given his recent injury history.
The talented four-year safety missed the final five games of the regular season in 2011 with a right knee injury. Though he returned for the team's playoff loss in New Orleans, he was hardly 100 percent.
His left knee began bothering him early in training camp last year and required surgery. He missed eight games in 2012.
When healthy, Delmas is one of the top young safeties in the game. The Lions have been trying to pair a cover safety with Quin's particular skill set alongside Delmas for years. Together, they could form one of the top young safety duos in the NFL, and have good depth behind them with Spievey and ![]()
Since he was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NFL draft, Delmas has played in 49 games for the Lions, with 267 tackles, three interceptions and 17 passes defended.
The heart and soul of the Lions defense - as he's been described by coaches - Delmas is a playmaker, and if he can stay healthy, the Lions' secondary is starting to round into very good form with the signings of Quin and cornerback ![]()
