Jason Jones comes full circle by signing a three-year deal with the Lions

Posted Mar 13, 2013

Jason Jones' father, J.D. Jones, worked for Ford Motor Company for more than 30 years. Now Jason will play for the Ford family in Honolulu Blue.

J.D. Jones spent 34 1/2 years working for the Ford Motor Company. His son, Jason Jones, can now say he's worked for the Ford Family, too.

Jason Jones is the newest defensive end for the Detroit Lions, signing a three-year free-agent contract Wednesday.

"Now I'm coming home to play for the Ford family, so, it's kind of ironic, but it's kind of full circle too. It's nice," Jones said during his introductory press conference Wednesday.

Jones was born in Detroit, went to high school at Southfield-Lathrup and played his college ball at Eastern Michigan.

"He's a son of Detroit, he's a fan of all Detroit," Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said of Jones. "He let us know that when we were in Nashville together. He let us know that when we played the Seahawks this year."

Jason JonesSchwartz drafted Jones when he was the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans in 2008.

As far as the type of football player the Lions are getting, the 6-foot-5, 276-pound Jones is a multi-dimensional player who can play on the edge and then move inside in the nickel.

"He can play end, he can play tackle, he's stood up, he's done a lot of different things," Schwartz said.

"He's probably going to hold most of his time at defensive end here, but he can rush inside, he can play inside. He obviously has great length. He affects the game and he affects the passer and particularly, combined with the other guys we have, notably (Ndamukong) Suh and (Nick) Fairley inside, we think it's a good match."

Over the last five seasons, Jones has appeared in 61 games (31 starts), with 122 tackles, 18.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles.

With Cliff Avril and Lawrence Jackson testing the free-agent market, Jones' signing comes at a position of need for the Lions. He'll have an opportunity to start for the Lions in 2013.
