The NFL, however, is based on reality and although Stanton was able to generate some offense, he wasn't able to get the Lions into the end zone and Detroit suffered its first shutout since 2001.
"You want to go out and have some success and start moving the ball on offense," Stanton said. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to get the ball into the end zone and that's what we're judged on as an offense.
"We have to come away with touchdowns when we have the opportunity and I wasn't able to do that."
Neither was Culpepper and he also took it personally, but gave Green Bay's defense some credit.
"It's very disappointing. It's embarassing to me. We have to be able to figure out a way to move down the field and put points on the board," Culpepper said. "They did a good job of putting pressure on the quarterback all day."
Culpepper refused to use the absence of wide receiver ![]()
"Calvin is a great player, and to have him is a positive. but not having him there we still should have been able to move the ball down the field and put points on the board," Culpepper said. "I think we just didn't execute, simple as that, everybody on the team. We have to get back to the basics."
The Lions have a bye next week and Culpepper said that one of the first things every player on the team should do during the time off is take stock of his own individual performance so far.
"It's a good time for the bye to come right now," Culpepper said. "Everybody has to look in the mirror and say, 'what can I do to make us better?' We have to look at the film and make the corrections, individually and collectively."
Stanton completed 5-of-11 passes for 57 yards, but he was intercepted twice, including once in the end zone by the Packers' Atari Bigby.
Except for the interceptions, Stanton impressed Fox analyst Daryl Johnston.
"For a young guy, he has a good feel for the pocket," Johnston said.
Sunday's game was the first appearance of the regular season for Stanton, who has been the Lions' third quarterback behind rookie ![]()
The former Michigan State star was a second-round draft pick of the Lions in but Stanton missed that entire season after having arthroscopic knee surgery. He saw limited playing time in four games in 2008. The highlight of his season came against Jacksonville when he completed 6-of-8 passes for 94 yards and one touchdown.
The touchdown came on his first NFL pass, making him only the second Detroit player to achieve that feat.
Stanton said that while Green Bay was able to add a few new wrinkles to its defense during its bye week, the Packers didn't do anything that the Lions shouldn't have been able to adjust to.
"It's just a matter of execution and putting ourselves in good situations," Stanton said. "The biggest thing is not taking negative plays on first and second down. We need to take that upon ourselves. It's not a play-calling issue. It's a matter of going out and doing your job."
Stanton said that the 3-4 defense Green Bay is using for the first time this year under new defensive coordinator Dom Capers can create problems for any offense.
"They did some different stuff, jumping some different looks, but that's the luxury of having the 3-4. You can disguise some things and do things that you wouldn't plan for, but we should be able to adjust," Stanton said.
Culpepper said that the Lions have been showing improvement, despite Sunday;s setback. .Culpepper didn't have a ready explanation for why Detroit struggled.
"That's just a part of football," He said. "There have been improvements. Today we took a step back for whatever reason, but I'm confident we still have the ability and the players on this team to be successful."
