Lions to help Metro Detroit with Annual Holiday Game Day Drives

Posted Nov 9, 2011

Toy Drive will be held prior to Nov. 20 game; Coat Drive prior to Thanksgiving Day game

Allen Park, Mich. — The Detroit Lions and its fans are once again doing their part to help those who are less fortunate in metro Detroit this season with their annual holiday game day drives.

The Lions 17th annual Toy Drive will be held prior to the Lions-Carolina Panthers game on Sunday, November 20, at Ford Field.  Fans attending are asked to help the United States Marine Corps and its annual holiday toy drive --- Toys for Tots.

The Lions have joined forces with the United States Marines Corps in Detroit, WXYZ-Channel 7, 97.1 The Ticket and Central Michigan Movers in this year’s effort.  Uniformed Marines will be located at the stadium gates on game day to collect new, unwrapped toys.  Kickoff for the November 20th game is 1:00 p.m.  Marines will begin collecting toys at 10:30 a.m. The toys will go to needy children in Metro Detroit in time for the holiday season.

The 21st annual Lions Coat Drive will be held at Ford Field on Thanksgiving Day, November 24.

Fans attending the 72nd annual Thanksgiving Day game are asked to donate clean, new or gently used coats or blankets to help keep the needy warm this winter.  Fans can drop off coats and blankets at The Salvation Army locations at the stadium gates as fans enter the Lions-Green Bay Packers game.  The gates will open at 10:30 a.m. with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m.

This year’s coat drive is sponsored by Pepsi in association with The Salvation Army, WXYZ-Channel 7 and 97.1 The Ticket.

Thousands of coats have been collected since the drive's inception in 1991 when former Lions equipment manager Dan Jaroshewich, now of Ford Field, started the program.
