Detroit opens the preseason at home vs. Cleveland and travels to Baltimore for nationally televised game

Allen Park, Mich.—The Detroit Lions announced today their 2012 Preseason Schedule that includes the preseason opener vs. Cleveland at Ford Field and a nationally televised preseason game at Baltimore Friday, August 17 on FOX. The Lions will finish their preseason slate of games at Oakland and host Buffalo in the preseason finale.

The Lions game at Baltimore marks the second consecutive season the team will appear on a nationally televised preseason broadcast. In 2011, the Lions defeated the New England Patriots 34-10 during a nationally-televised CBS broadcast.

 This year marks the first time since the 1991-93 seasons that Detroit will play on national television in consecutive preseasons. In 1991, the Lions faced the Denver Broncos in the annual Hall of Fame Game (Canton, Ohio; 7/27/91; ABC). The next year, their nationally-televised preseason game occurred at Buffalo (8/17/92; ESPN). Then in 1993, Detroit matched up against Dallas in the World Bowl (8/8/93; CBS) played in London, England.

The last time Detroit appeared on national television during the preseason as a road team was in 1997 when that played at Pittsburgh (8/17/97; TNT).

2012 Preseason Opponents:

Preseason Week 1 (August 9-13)

In the 2012 preseason opener, Detroit hosts the Cleveland Browns at Ford Field. The Lions and Browns have faced off 43 previous times in the preseason and

Detroit owns a 24-18-1 lead in the preseason series. The 2012 preseason game between the clubs marks the 11th straight season they have battled in the preseason. Since 2002, the teams are even at 5-5 in the series.

The Lions 43 preseason games against the Browns are the most against any other NFL club since 1949.

Preseason Week 2 (Friday, August 17)

The Lions take to the road when they travel to face the Baltimore Ravens. The nationally-televised game is the third preseason game between the two teams. Like the previous two, this year’s game will also take place in Baltimore. The Ravens own a 2-0 edge in the series. The last preseason game between the Lions and Ravens occurred in 2004.

Preseason Week 3 (August 23-27)

In Preseason Week 3, Detroit will remain on the road and head west to the Pacific Coast to take on the Oakland Raiders. The 2012 game is the sixth preseason game between the Lions and Raiders. The last time they played in the preseason was at Oakland in 2006.

Preseason Week 4 (August 30-31)

Detroit closes out the 2012 Preseason when they host the Buffalo Bills. This year marks the 32nd meeting between the Lions and Bills in the preseason, and they have squared off in the preseason finale each year since 2002. Detroit leads the series 19-11-1, including wins the past four years.

2012 Lions Home Opponents:

Along with home games against their traditional NFC North Division rivals (Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings) the Lions 2012 home schedule includes the following NFC opponents: Atlanta Falcons, St. Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks. AFC opponents visiting Ford Field in 2012 are the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts.
