Game Notes: Lions at Seahawks

Posted Nov 8, 2009

  • Lions T Jeff Backus made his 136th consecutive start in today’s game. He has the longest streak of consecutive starts among offensive linemen in the NFL and he is fifth among active players.
  • LB Larry Foote started for the 88th straight time. He is fourth among linebacker in consecutive starts.
  • K Jason Hanson, who is a native Spokane, Wash., and playing in his home state, has appeared in his 279th career game, a Lions’ franchise record.
  • The Lions took a 7-0 lead on the first play of a drive that started at the Seahawks 2-yard line. QB Matthew Stafford tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the season to fellow rookie TE Brandon Pettigrew on a 7-yard pass. It was Pettigrew’s first career touchdown.
  • The drive was set up when rookie S Louis Delmas picked off a Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck pass on the Seahawks first play from scrimmage and returned it 29 yards. After a false-start penalty on the Lions, Stafford connected with Pettigrew.
  • The interception was the first of Delmas’ career.
  • After the Lions forced a turnover on the Seahawks second play from scrimmage, a fumble forced by LB Julian Peterson and recovered by S Ko Simpson, to give the Lions ball back at the Seahawks’ 29-yard line.
  • On 3rd-and-10 at the Seahawks 29-yard line, Stafford hit WR Bryant Johnson on a 29-yard pass in the back of the endzone. It was Stafford’s fifth TD toss of the year and Johnson’s second touchdown receptions of the season.
  • The Lions defense set up 17 points in the first quarter by forcing turnovers (interception and fumble) on the Seahawks first two plays from scrimmage and then the Lions defense held on 4th-and-1 at the Seahawks 38-yard line.
  • One the fourth-down stop at the 38-yard line, Foote stopped RB Julius Jones short of the first down marker that gave the ball back to the Lions.
  • The Lions 17-0 lead after the first quarter is the first 17-0 lead they have built on the road since they were leading 17-0 after one quarter at Green Bay December 12, 1982.
  • The last time the Lions wear leading 17-0 after the first quarter was November 23, 2008 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • LB Jordon Dizon helped the Lions defense to force a three-and-out on the Seahawks first possession of the second half. On second down, Dizon sacked Hasselbeck six yards behind the line of scrimmage and forced a fumble on the play (recovered by Seattle). It was Dizon’s first career sack and first career forced fumble.
  • On third down, the Lions forced an incompletion to force the Seahawks to punt.
  • As the Seahawks closed in on the Lions in the third quarter by connecting on a 24-yard field goal, making the score 17-16, a potential touchdown was saved when Delmas raced down the field and clipped Seahawks RB Julius Jones on the heals to stop a 49-yard screen play. Without Delmas’ tackles, Jones would have most likely scored on the play.
  • Following the Delmas tackle, the Lions stopped the Seahawks, forcing an incompletion, on 3rd-and-1 at the Lions 6-yard line.
